Composed of the city of Los Santos and the surrounding countryside area of Blaine County, the world is much larger in area than earlier entries in the series. It may be fully explored after the game's beginning without restriction, although story progress unlocks more gameplay content.

The single-player mode lets players control three characters. The game's combat system has been significantly improved; auto-aim and a cover system can now be used as assistance against enemies. New weapons have been added to the game, including firearms such as grenade launchers, sniper rifles, and submachine guns, as well as melee weapons such as baseball bats and crowbars. Players can also use explosives, which can be used to your advantage. In addition to the return of traditional weapons found in previous Grand Theft Auto games, Grand Theft Auto V introduces weapon customization.
